Fresh Wood Student Woodworking Competition

You’re going to love this. Though we all get to see immense amounts of manufactured  woodwork any day of the week, getting to admire hand-crafted, unique, inspiring projects  just doesn’t happen everyday.  It’s easy to forget just how much effort and time goes into a project when all you see is the finished product, even more so when that finished product is mass produced. But a few seconds looking at the finalists’ pieces in the AWFS Fresh Wood Woodworking Competition makes it all very clear.

If you watch the video above, you get a fine introduction into what the competition is and why. But if you just want to see the projects (they only get around to showing a couple in the video), below is a gallery of photos I took. And I didn’t even manage to get them all.

So who won? Candice Groenke of Fort Bragg, CA took the Best of Show prize with her Katana Bench.  It’s shown in the first five photos here.  It should be evident why she won. While many of the projects have far more elaborate elements, and perhaps more complexities to their designs, her work is sophisticated and seemingly flawless like many others in the set.  I’m sure the judging wasn’t easy.  Enjoy.
