Vanity project
Ordered some alder, hard to find where I'm at. Lumber came when it was supposed to, high quality lumber, finished as specified.

Great piece of wood, you all provided me with a very useful lumber choice that I can maximize the full piece you sent me. This is my second order and have not been disappointed with your choices and support.

Alder wood for GripIt Floorstand
My wife bought a GripIt Floorstand 25 years ago to aid in doing her needlepoint. In moving to a new home we lost some pieces of the ingenious tool, so I decided to replace the lost parts. The GripIt was made from alder wood which would not stain any of the beautiful needlepoint, but regrettably GripIt was no longer available. To the rescue came Woodworkers Source with all the great choices of wood--including alder. Kirk and Lyle were exceptionally helpful in placing my order, even when my email server acted up. The order was packaged very carefully and the precious wood arrived safely. The price was quite reasonable, the wood was beautifully clear (as I requested), and there was ample wood to complete my project. Woodworkers Source is a wonderful resource and I would certainly recommend them.

Not what I asked for
I asked for straight grained wood for use for wood block printing. I got straight grain on the last foot of both ends.

IT'S GREAT -- JUST DECIDE ON A FINISH
It took a bit to dial in the finish.
But for my money, Alder is great with a Danish oil base.
Danish brings out the grain without blotching the wood.
It provides depth and luster.
2 or 3 coats of Danish then Sealcoat, and 3 or 4 Poly.
This brings out the beauty of the wood and gives a great finish.

Excellent service
There was a little bark and some blemishes, but overall the wood is very nice and will work well for my purposes.

Thicker Than Expected
he wood arrived in good shape and is very handsome. But it's 15/16" thick. If you need or are expecting 3/4" or even 13/16" (as was advertised), you'll need to do some planing.

Easy to work wood
Purchased this wood to use in beginning (small) furniture projects with my 12 year old. The wood works easily with hand tools, has minimum amount of tear out when hand planing, and sands nicely (although it seems to be a bit soft for carding, but that might be my problem). Finished in a rubbed oil and wax, the grain pops with a nice, cherry-like glow. Will be working more in this wood, which I tried on a lark because of the monthly special.

No complaints
I love alder. I've made several Mexican theme dining tables, entry doors, and cabinets over the years. It's probably not a good choice if youre wanting to make something that'll take a beating because its prety soft. For southwestern / mexican style stuff, this is the best. Of course, thre's also mesquite but its not nearly as inexpensive.
